DNA research has uncovered remarkable family connections between famous wine varieties and forgotten ancestors, revealing how centuries of natural crossings helped shape the wines we know today.
When does a vine become old?
In 2024, the OIV defined "old vines" as those at least 35 years old, requiring 85% of a vineyard's vines to meet this standard. Aging doesn’t guarantee better wine quality, as many factors influence it. Old vines hold cultural and genetic significance and will be recognized with an OVR Seal starting October 2026.
